Reflections from Bootcamp – Day 1

Day 1 of the Acts 29 Bootcamp / LEAD Conference was great.  I connected with several great people including a guy named Euan from outside of London and a guy named Cheech (no, Chong wasn’t there) who shares a passion for the lost in Lincoln, Nebraska.  It’s a pretty remarkable experience to be amongst about ~300 (my estimate) young people passionate about Jesus to the point of be willing to step out there, put their life on the line, and do something crazy like plant a church.

There were three bootcamp sessions yesterday, led respectively by Dr. Daniel Doriani from Covenant Theological Seminary (who also pastors at Central Presbyterian here in St. Louis), Dr. Anthony Bradley – also from Covenant Theological Seminary, and Bob Thune from Coram Deo in Omaha.

Dr. Doriani spoke on “The Integrated Life of a Pastor” exegeting from Ephesians 5.  Dr. Bradley spoke on “Learning from Jeremiah Wright and Black Liberation Theology” drawing lessons regarding contextualization that can be learned from what has happened in the past.  Bob Thune then presented the first of what will be three sessions on “Building Gospel DNA in Your Church.”  Real good and helpful stuff.

After dinner, Eric Mason from Epiphany Fellowship out in Philly preached a powerful message on “The Leader and the Gospel.”  This guy can bring it and he does so in a very engaging way.  The worship band from Epiphany led us in a black-gospel-jazzy worship set which filled the old Catholic church that The Journey now calls home.

Today I’ll be heading back down for another full day (9am-8pm) of it.  If you’re interested, be sure to check out the live stream from the conference today via the Planting Channel.  You won’t be able to catch the bootcamp sessions, but you can catch the “main” sessions which ought to be really good.  The sessions below should all be available live:

10:45 AM – 11:30 AM: Eric Mason on “Hybrid Leaders”
