Steeping in James – Our Setup

Meg and I recently began a study together in the Book of James. This study spawned out of our desire to cultivate a consistent time of studying God’s Word together as a married couple (read my post, Non-Cheesy Bible Study Method for Couples for more of the background).

For our study, we are using Douglas Moo’s commentary from the Tyndale New Testament Commentaries Series.  We selected this commentary over others for our primary guide due mainly to the concise nature of this series and the fact that I’ve read and benefited greatly from some of Moo’s other work (like his Roman’s commentary in the NIVAC series and his work with D.A. Carson on An Introduction to the New Testament).

Using his commentary as a guide, we’ve broken down the study into 10 weeks of the following divisions:

  • Week 1 – Introduction and Background on the Book of James & 1:1
  • Week 2 – 1:2-18 (pp 58-77 of the commentary)
  • Week 3 – 1:19-2:14 (pp 77-101)
  • Week 4 – “Works” in Paul and James, 2:14-21 (pp 101-110)
  • Week 5 – “Justification” in the OT, 2:21-26 (pp 110-117)
  • Week 6 – 3:1-4:12 (pp 118-153…it’s possible that we’ll split this into two weeks)
  • Week 7 – 4:13-5:11 (pp 153-173)
  • Week 8 – 5:12-20 (pp 173-179)
  • Week 9 – “Anoint”, 5:14 (pp 179-183)
  • Week 10 – “Healing” (pp 183-191)

My hope is to post here each week on what God is teaching me and what God is teaching us collectively through this study.  I’ll likely also include some of the questions and observations that I jot out as we read/study each week.  Perhaps you’ll decide to buy Moo’s commentary for yourself and follow along (click picture of the book above to take you to Amazon where you can buy it).  We’ve already done Week 1 so I’ll be posting my reflections, etc on the Introduction and Background in the next few days.
