5.31.08 – Boundary Water Sabbatical

The following is from my journal dated 5.31.08 related to my trip to the Boundary Waters)

5.31.08 (Saturday)

I’m home now and it’s been a long 30 hours or so. It rained all of Thursday night and Friday morning. We had to pack everything up in the rain which was a little messy. We left camp at about 10:30am to go back to Bottle Portage and meet Randy (our fast tow driver).

As we approached Bottle Portage, the entire lake was like glass leaving mystically-clear, perfect reflections of the rock and tree-lined banks. It was absolutely stunning. I really wish I would have had more film or my digital camera with me. It was almost eerie being the only ones on the lake and having these perfect reflections around us. Crooked trees looked like arrows, rocks looked like giant arrow heads. It was amazing.

We got to Bottle Portage at about noon, had lunch and portaged everything over to the other side. Our ride showed up at about 2pm and we had our two hour ride in.

After packing up all of our stuff, we showered at the Voyagaire Lodge ($5/person) and hit the road. We stopped in Cook, MN for dinner at McDonald’s (have you ever noticed that when ever you leave the country or go hide in the wilderness for a week the first thing you want to do when you come back is go to McDonald’s…weird) and then proceeded to drive all night to get home in good time to have a Saturday with our families.

Ken graciously drove until about 10pm. Matt drove from 10pm until 3am (I stayed up with him for the most part…nodded off some). Kathy drove from 3am to 5am and then Ken took back over for the last two hours.

We got to Ken and Kathy’s place around 7am and Matt and I decided to crash there for a couple of hours before continuing on to St. Louis. We napped until 9:15am, hit the road and were home by noon.

It’s great to be home. I’ve missed Meg and the girls and was so happy to see them. Iris and Lydia both look 3 months older instead of one week older (I love how that works when you go away and come back).

Iris wasn’t a big fan of her magic wand:

Me: Iris, check out this cool magic wand that I made you.

Iris: No Daddy. It’s a stick.

Meg: No Iris, it’s a magic wand. Daddy made it for you on his fishing trip.

Iris: Um…no. It’s just a stick Mommy.

We just got back from getting ice cream as a family at Fritz’s and put the kids to bed.

It was a wonderful vacation but the all-nighter last night for the drive home is taking its toll. I’ll be crashing early tonight.
