5.24.08 – Boundary Water Sabbatical

(The following is from my journal dated 5.24.08 related to my trip to the Boundary Waters)

5.24.08 (Saturday)

This is the beginning of our camping trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota. I’m with my friend Matt, his folks (Ken and Kathy), as well as his aunt and uncle.

We left St. Louis on Friday evening at 6pm. From there, we drove to Matt’s parent’s house in Summum, Illinois. We then moved all of our gear in with theirs in their Nissan Maxima–complete with a canoe strapped to the top. We continued on last night to Anamosa, Iowa where we stayed the night with some of Matt’s extended family and met up with some others who were going along as a separate group (cousins, etc).

We set out from Anamosa at 6:30am this morning and arrived here in Crane Lake, Minnesota at about 5:30pm after stopping off in Cook, Minnesota to get our camping permit. Lots of driving. I slept some and did some reading.

We “put it” at 6:30am tomorrow. We’re staying at the Pine Ridge motel tonight and had our last hot shower for the next week.

Everyone is sleeping now. It’s 11pm and I’m trying to finish Driscoll’s Vintage Jesus so that I can leave it in the car tomorrow and move on to one of the other (many) books I’ve brought.

It’s gorgeous up here. Quiet and peaceful. I’m really looking forward to this week.

I was able to briefly talk to Meg via phone tonight. She put Iris on who asked, “Daddy, are you still fishing with mister Matt?”
