More on Manuscripts and Daniel Wallace

The other day I published a post titled, Photographing NT Greek Manuscripts.  In it I mentioned an article on Daniel Wallace and his goal of photographing 1.3 million pages of Greek New Testament manuscripts.
If you liked that article, take a look at a piece that Wallace wrote himself on Bible.org titled, Greek New Testament Manuscripts Discovered [...]

Another Tim Keller Interview

From Justin Taylor:
A new interview here, where Keller is asked “a few questions about his ministry and understanding of communicating the gospel, and then a few questions from a skeptics’ perspective to see how he would answer.”

In a Pit

I started a new read yesterday (sent to me by a close friend), In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day by Mark Batterson.
A couple of quotes from the early pages:
God is in the business of strategically positioning us in the right place at the right time.  A sense of destiny is our birthright [...]

The Reason for God – Part 7

I finished reading Keller’s book, The Reason for God over the weekend and must say that I am, on-the-whole, extremely impressed.  It’s anticipation for being a modern-day Mere Christianity (C.S. Lewis) has been realized.
Even though I’ve completed the book, I’ll continue to blog the rest of the way through it over the course of the next [...]

Joe Thorn on Mark Dever on Evangelism

Joe Thorn offers some brief comments on the first chapter of Dever’s book, The Gospel and Personal Evangelism.  After reading Joe’s summary, I’ve added Dever’s book to my “soon to consume” list:
1. Pray.
Our weakness in evangelism is often related to an absence of prayer. When we neglect praying about evangelism we see the task as too [...]

OT History – Part 10

Tonight we’ll be focusing on 1 Samuel 4-9 in the Old Testament Historical Books class (part 10 of 20 – half way there!).  We’ll look at the Ark Narrative, Israel’s demand for a king, and the meeting of Samuel and Saul.
The notes for the class can be found here:

1 Samuel 4-9

As a primer for tonight, I’ve [...]

Photographing NT Greek Manuscripts

I stumbled across an interesting article today on the Lincoln Journal Star page about Dr. Daniel B. Wallace down at Dallas Theological Seminary.  Dr. Wallace is undertaking a project to photograph 1.3 million pages of Greek New Testament manuscripts.
Read the whole article here.  Below are a few sample:
Wallace aims to create high-quality facsimiles of many [...]

The Reason for God – Part 6

Chapter 5 of Keller’s book is titled, “How Can a Loving God Send People to Hell.”  This is an excellent chapter and really helps to understand this complex question.
The following are some quotes from the chapter (pp68-83):

In our culture, divine judgment is one of Christianity’s most offensive doctrines.

It seems to our minds unfair, therefore, that [...]

Rob Bell Profile

mlive.com ran an article yesterday that is a profile of Rob Bell.
Some exerpts regarding starting his church:
“I thought there was a whole generation of people hungry for Jesus, but unable to connect with the churches they had experienced,” he says. “I had a defining moment in 1998 on the green futon in the upstairs bedroom. It [...]

The Reason for God – Part 5

Keller opens chapter 4 of his book, The Reason for God with a quote from a woman named Helen who says, “There are so many people who are not religious at all who are more kind and even more moral than many of the Christians I know.”
The following are excerpts from the rest of the [...]

Easter is EARLY this Year

An expert from Joanna Sugden’s blog titled,  Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Easter:
Why the date of Easter changes every year
The date of Easter is a moveable feast because it follows the date of the Spring Equinox and the cycles of the moon. It was agreed by Egyptian astronomers in Alexandria in 235AD.  They determined [...]

Spiritual Checkup

Justin Buzzard posts a summary of Don Whitney’s Ten Questions To Diagnose Your Spiritual Health in which he lays out the ten questions to reflect on regarding how you’re doing spiritually.
These are short posts that are well worth the time to reflect on.  Read them here and then here (part 2).

How Well Do You Pay Attention?

This made me laugh:

A 2-Yr Old’s Easter…Continued

Earlier this week I put up a post titled, A 2-Yr Old’s Easter and basically asked the question: “How old is old enough to learn about the cross?”
Russel Moore’s post, Silly Rabbit, Easter’s Not for Kids over on The Resurgence website has been helpful in me processing this question.  Moore concludes:
This Easter, preach the Gospel… to the senior [...]

Katherine Heigl – Too Lazy for Religion

The San Fransisco Chronicle recently quoted actress Katherine Heigl as being “to lazy for religion.”
Heigl, who was apparently raised in a Mormon household, supposedly stated:
“I still love the theology of the Mormon religion and I think it is a wonderful way to grow up. But I think any real commitment to religion takes time, effort and [...]

Cultural Immersion

USA Today ran a thought-provoking article by G. Jeffrey MacDonald yesterday titled Christian Students Get Immersed in Lives of the Poor.
I found myself agreeing and disagreeing at times and I think this article does a good job of expressing the tension between being relevant in culture and still speaking the truth.
I highly recommend this short article.

Engineers of Jihad?

Engineers are unique people.  Most of us will tell you that.  But most of us would never conclude what a controversial Oxford University study concluded:
Islamic terrorists are more likely to be engineers than members of any other profession–and not because engineers possess superior technological skills.
You can read the Oxford paper here or read a brief summary [...]

Best Free Software

PC Week has published a comprehensive and categorized list of their Best Free Software.
I recently downloaded and installed GIMP and was happy to see it made the list.  A couple of others that piqued my interest were Audacity and Foxit Reader.

OT History – Part 9

1 Samuel 1-3 is the passage we’ll be looking at tonight in the Old Testament Historical Books class.  We’ll spend some time talking about Hannah and then turn our attention primarily to the calling of Samuel.
The notes for tonight’s class as well as my synthetic outline for the book of 1 Samuel are below.

1 Samuel 1-3

You’re Not Even Listening To Me – Part 1

A while back, I posted on the Active Listening course I took through AAIM. In that post, I promised some additional posts on the content of the course, and some of the things I had learned.
This will be the first of 4 follow-up posts to my original post. The four follow-ups will be [...]

Performance Reviews & Involuntary Attrition

It’s performance review time at work.  A time of year of mystery, suspense, and disgruntled-ness.  Read as Paul Rako muses of workspace performance reviews, firings, and “involuntary attrition” in his blog post Cisco doesn’t fire people; they allow “involuntary attrition”.
Quotable:

While we talk about ranking I have a few opinions on why this I so evil. [...]

Happy Birthday

Today is Meg’s birthday which meant I had to do some early morning gift wrapping.

A 2-Yr Old’s Easter

My wife asked me this past Sunday how I thought we ought to handle the topic of Easter this year with our two-year old, Iris.  To be honest, I hadn’t given it a whole lot of thought (my wife is good at convicting me like this at times).
As we talked more, we discussed sharing with her [...]
